I've seen multipostings a lot of time in foren but most of the time the poster doesn't understand why he doesn't get any reply or flame replies.  In the following article I explain the reason for this and what's the difference between a multiposting and a crossposting.

 If you have a Linux LAN server in your home network to provide printing and storage services you also can use this server to offer different operting systems to your clients with a PXE boot serevr. This can be liveCD images which can be started and used immediately or installation images so your clients can upgrade to the next distro release easily. Rescue live CDs are also useful if there are any client issues.

My PXE server runs openSuSE 11.4 and offers the installation image of openSuSE 11.4 (32 and 64 bit) and Mint LiveCDs of LXDE and LMDE. Furthermore  a biostest, rescue system and memorytest is available. The following pages describe in detail how to configure your serve. In addition all the relevant config files of my server are available for download.
This page way create in May 2007 initially an in May 2011 improved with much more details.

A nice one liner which lists which grub version is installed on which partition (Source)

In addtion there exists a nice PythonScript findgub from McDaniel. It displays much mor info than the one liner below. In general the one line is sufficient.

From time to time everybody has to chroot into another operating system instance. Either to repair a system or to install Mint13 in a LVM . Unfortunately this happens very seldom. See following command sequence for reference:

Is till use an old Telephone exchange system Auerswald ETS2204. Unfortunately the administration software runs on Windows7 but no longer on Windows10. So I had to find an alternate way to run the software. All my systems run Linux so I tried to start the software with wine and the software started successfully. Unfortunately I wasn't able to use COM1 and had to find out how to access COM1 in wine. Because my Laptops don't have a RS232 plug any more I bought a cable with an USB to RS232 converter. Following steps helped me to get COM1 to work in wine:

From time to time you need a Rescue System - because your system doesn't start any more, you had a head crash and want to save your data or you just want to repartition your disks. I like SystemRescueCD. The documentation is available in English, German, French and Spanish. All file systems are supported and a lot of nice tools are available. In particular there is a shell script which easily allows to install the rescue system on an USB  stick. 300 MB is sufficient But if you want to use the stick also as a data repository the stick should have more memory.

From time to time you have to use and configure grub. If you don't do it every day you forget a lot of details about grub. I found a very helpful and comprehensive Webseite in Englisch from Jodeep Bakshi. A nice tutorial about grub2 is here available.

From time to time I get a hanging mouse on my Lenvovo Thinkpad. My system runs a Debian Linux on Mint 13.  At this point in time /var/log/syslog has multiple lines of the following format:

Feb 16 13:06:24 majestix kernel: [30109.311850] psmouse serio4: TouchPad at isa0 060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1

That's annoying and I searched in the net and finally found a workaround I describe below.

Recently I had to upgrade my IBM T40 from Mint11 to Mint13 with Mate and unfortunately te fan control didn't work any more. The fan was active all the time even if there was nothing to do for the CPU. I posted ma issue in this German Forum (Linuxmintusers.de) and got vey useful tips how to solve the issue. Finally I installed tpfanco. That's a very professional tool to control the fan with software. My T40 fan control now works fine again.

More and more seniors use a labtop for their work. They commonly want to have larger fonts so they can read the text much more comfortable. On Mint11 just execute the following steps:

1)  Menu-> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts -> Details -> Resolution: Increase dots per inch
2) ALT F2 -> gconf-editor /apps/mintMenu/plugins-> Applications -> increase width. That way the mine menu will become larger and can display the larger text.
3)  Firefox: Edit -> Preferences -> Contents -> Adapt Fonts & Colors

A screensaver is a useful tool but unfortunately it's annoying when there are active applicatoins like kaffeine or teamviewer and you have to move the mouse periodically just to deactivate the screensaver. Fortunately there exists a nice tool called caffeine. Just configure the applications you want to force to deactivate the screensaver and enjoy to view videose or to have remote sessions with shared screen without any screensaver interuption.
Unfortunatel it doesn't work any mor on Mint Maja with Mate. There fortunately exists a patch.
